A flexible second-story ADU to keep family close while preserving privacy.
Designed to support multi-generational living, this project combines a new 784-square-foot detached two-car garage with a 757-square-foot second-floor accessory dwelling unit created for the homeowner's mother. Careful planning was required to maximize livable space while meeting the property's strict 20-foot height limitation.
The resulting design creates a seamless connection between the ADU and the main residence, with a welcoming entry foyer accessed from a covered patio nestled between the two structures. The first floor also includes a utility room with a kitchenette, providing convenient support for the property's backyard pool and outdoor living areas.
Above, the ADU features an open-concept kitchen and living area, a full bath, and a spacious bedroom with both a walk-in closet and additional storage. To support long-term flexibility, the stairway was designed to accommodate a future chair lift, ensuring the home can adapt to changing mobility needs while allowing its residents to maintain comfort and independence.
